Vor allem mit ihrem zweiten Album „Mother Earth“, das im Dezember 2000 in Holland veröffent-licht wurde, schaffte die Band zunächst dort und in Benelux den Durchbruch, doch ihre Popularität schwappte bald darauf auch auf die angrenzenden Länder über, allerdings nicht von selbst: Die Band überzeugte ihr Publikum immer wieder aufs Neue durch unermüdliche Liveauftritte wo immer es ging und sammelte zunächst in Benelux, Frankreich und Deutschland ihre wichtigsten Liveerfahrungen. Seitdem im Jahr 2003 „Mother Earth“ regulär in Deutschland erschien, aber auch seit der Veröffentlichung ihres neusten Albums „The Silent Force“ im November 2004 gehören Within Temptation zu den wichtigsten Bands in der Gothic-Metalszene, obwohl die Band sich selbst stilistisch gerne liberaler definiert. Wenn man bedenkt, dass „The Silent Force“ erst ihr dritter Longplayer ist, drängt sich die Frage auf, wie die Band um das Künstler-paar Sharon den Adel und Robert Westerholt es geschafft hat, sich in so kurzer Zeit so eindrucksvoll zu steigern. Natürlich ist es als Künstler wichtig, vielseitig und neugierig zu bleiben, aber gleichzeitig Riesenschritte nach vorne zu machen und dabei nicht zu stolpern, ist ebenfalls eine Kunst für sich. Nach einer knapp elfjährigen Bandgeschichte, die teils noch unter anderem Namen verlief, nämlich The Circle, ist es an der Zeit, sich genauer mit dieser faszinierenden Band zu beschäftigen. Einerseits, um vielleicht noch unbekannte Hintergründe aufzudecken, andererseits, um einen kompak-ten Überblick zu liefern. Doch viel mehr als eine Annäherung kann die vorliegende Ausgabe von Starfacts nicht sein. Sie ist vielmehr eine Zwischenbilanz, denn Within Temptation werden uns hoffentlich noch sehr lange Zeit erhalten bleiben. Es ist eine Spurensuche im Leben einer Band, die sich mit jeder neuen Veröffentlichung konsequent auf den nächsthöheren Level arbeitet. |
Especially with their second album ‚Mother Earth’, published in the Netherlands in December 2000, the band achieved a break-through in Benelux. Soon afterwards their popularity flashed over to neighbouring countries, not without assistance though: The band convinced their audience by untiring live performances again and again and gained their most important live experiences whenever and wherever possible in Benelux, France and Germany. Since the release of ‚Mother Earth’ in Germany in 2003, and especially since their latest album „The Silent Force“ has come out in November 2004, Within Temptaion must be named among the most important bands on the Goth-Metal scene, although the band prefers to define their style more liberally. Considering that „The Silent Force“ is only their third album, the question of how this band, led by the artistic duo Sharon den Adel and Robert Westerholt, managed in such a short period to advance so impressively, promises to be of interest. Of course, for an artist it is important to stay versatile and curious, but to progress by leaps and bounds at the same time without tripping over one’s own speed is quite a feat. After almost eleven years of band-history, which in part went under a different name, namely The Circle, it is time to investigate the development of this fascinating band. The intention is twofold: On the one hand to supply heretofore unknown background information, on the other hand to provide a concise overview. The magazine in hand cannot be much more than an approach, or rather an interim report, because hopefully Within Temptation will stay with us for quite a long time. It is collecting evidence in the life of a band which steps onto a higher level with every release. |
